This group was feisty and ready for a debate!
Everybody came to the table with an opinion and no one was afraid to challenge what anyone else said. Which always makes for a great show in my book. We kept getting to unintended insights that would stop me in my tracks and force a whole new line of questions. Just awesome!
So enjoy the show!

I have to ask this. You talk about the daily being the first all iPad magazine on the entire first segment of the show, but isn't Richard Branson's all iPad magazine PROJECT the first all iPad magazine? In fact, they just released issue #2.
I've read it and I find it does give me unique content that no one else was giving me. And it presented it to me in a way that no other magazine was. I mix of reading and interactivity.
I don't think it is the savior for the publishing industry, but used to it's full advantage it can be another interesting and successful media outlet.
We misspoke by calling it a "magazine." The press clearly calls it the first iPad only "newspaper" or "news daily. I apologize for having that written incorrectly in the notes.
Hi Bet,
I don't really care for superstars of the ad industry but that's mainly because I consider myself more of a marketer than advertising person. Plus, I live in Ottawa, Canada so we're a small market with smaller agencies so Madison Avenue is something I see on Mad Men and the big consumer campaigns rarely touch me because I don't have cable TV and I consume most of content online on websites, RSS feeds and the like.
Although I am still exposed to ads, it's not the same as with most people... so the ad industry is interesting to me but only in how I can adapt it's tactics and strategies to my marketing.
One thing I keep thinking about, and I don't mean to say that I don't listen to outside influences, is the power of local thinking and how we can leverage technology to connect really easily to our local superstars. Ottawa may be small but we have a number of great podcasts coming out of here and I love that technology has given a small place like the ability to have its voice heard everywhere else.
Hey Dan, I really relate to what you are saying about the power of local superstars.I live in Portland Oregon and we have, similar to Ottawa, a number of great podcasts coming out of the local area. We also have durable superstars that only exist in the context of local minds. When you put the two together you can really see the value of local in media.
You and I consume our media very similarly. I don't watch television and consume most of my information through podcasts like Bob's show, "the BeanCast". I found out the the value of Google Reader last year and have been hooked ever since.
What are some of the podcasts that you can recommend that are coming out of Ottawa?
Hi Bret,
The newest podcast on the scene here is the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Ottawa Chapter's "The Voice" which has somebody from marketing, PR and then I think Comms too present topics on each angle. Here's the most recent on social media outsourcing.
I would also say that this one isn't exclusively from Ottawa but one of the hosts and creators, Joe Thornley is from here. You can learn about Inside PR podcast here. He frequently records from Ottawa.
I don't have the time to get too deep into information architecture but I do pay attention to UX design and Jeff Parks has a great podcast on those subjects.
Mark Blevis also hosts an awesome podcast that touches on digital public affairs... great podcast.
Those are the ones that probably most relevant to subjects close to the Beancast.
Lately, I've been thinking about the topic of how technology, social media and the web have made it easier than ever to connect to people from anywhere but at the same time, it also makes it easier to connect to people locally.
My networking, reading and everything else seems to growing around local stuff.. local events, local meetups, local discussions and local people. It's seeming to me that as tech has made discovering things that are cool outside of Ottawa easier, it's also made it easier for me to see how rich the world is outside my window.
