HumongoNation Visit: Why We Promote Others

One of the unusual aspects of HumongoNation, the self-promotional tour organized by Connecticut agency Humongo, is how little self-promotion they do. They literally travel the country searching for other agencies and businesses to promote, with nary a word about their own agency.

So here's how it goes: They gets sponsors, they roll around the country in a borrowed Ford Flex, they stop by businesses, they shoot video, then post the video. Rinse and repeat.

How can this be good business?

Seeing that The BeanCast Marketing Podcast has a very similar strategy of promoting others in order to promote ourselves, I thought it would be interesting to get the Humongo take on it. So I took the opportunity before they interviewed me, to interview their president, Darryl Ohrt, and find out how he approaches this different flavor of self-promotion.

Its immense good will. There is also an industry struggle between the smaller agencies/bright minds and the big agencies. I think even the biggest brands out there find the smaller agencies better to work with but sometimes scale is an issue. It also seems the brightest minds work for Brands, Small-Mid Sized Agencies, or roll Solo aside from a few notable exceptions in my option.

The Humongo thing is awesome. They are awesome. Just like the Beancast is awesome...the man and the show. Kind of one big Awesomeness.

Speaking of awesome and spreading the love, your comments during Jaffe's interview of Budweiser were really quite good. Nice job.

I actually spazzed and didn't quite ask it properly. But they answered my question. Thanks for the kind words. I think Joseph might of been nervous unmuting me! LOL

But my point was in a big company they are going ask what kind of response rate they were going to shoot for. Its really hard because I know managers like to over promise and the street level make it happen people like to under promise/be more realistic. So how do you sell the social side to the people with the purse strings.

I like the format (same for Quick N Dirty) but see issues with the chat room on a longer program. The one Bud guy was talking directly with me before you came on. But I realized for an hour long program too much room for questions to be asked that Joseph had planned later in the show. Joseph stepped in and rightly so because it was his show and he is the driver. But I know he sincerely wants participation and none of the questions were off current topic but you know very well as moderator there is a progression you seek in the talk.

You did great with the audio/video btw. Iam really looking forward to monday's Humongo release of your meeting. I have enjoyed getting to know those folks.
